Certification services, certification of products and productionThe idea of certification and standardization goes back to the 4th century B.C., but the term itself appeared in everyday life several decades ago. Archaeological finds made by scientists in Greece confirm that people marked high-quality products with certain signs and symbols long before A.E. The first Certification law (product certification) was also found in Greece. According to this law all bronze products were to satisfy certain quality and to be marked with special inscriptions. Thus, bronze products were marked with fractional figures (e.g. 11/1 or 10/2) which reflected the ratio of bronze and tin in the product. As there was a law there were people who followed its execution, more than that it was very easy to control the quality of bronze products – bronze changes its tint with 2% deviation. The system used by ancient people is considered to be the first certification and standardization system.
The Middle Aged masters and craftsmen supplied their products with sealed “conformance guarantee letter” which indicated production material, confirmed the quality and guaranteed that the product was made at their manufactory or handicraft workshop. According to the records famous Renaissance artists and sculptors gave their customers “quality guarantees” stating that their pictures or sculptures would keep their positive properties up to 300 years.
Certification of products and work has also been widely used in Russia. In tsarist Russia it was obligatory to obtain a “guarantee letter from officials” in order to produce medicines, food, goods, services etc. Basically these “guarantee letters” are ancestors of modern GOST certification. Modern countdown of certification begins from 1993, when the bill concerning “The Protection of Consumers’ Rights” obliged to certify all goods and services of national consumption. The widespread usage of product certification has started since this particular time.
Nowadays, considering rapid pace of development and constant innovations, almost any product or service must undergo the process of certification, which correlates them with certain quality standards taken by the Government of Russian Federation.
By contrast with ancient times, when there was basically only one type of certification and standardization – as well as only a single state entity to execute it, the modern world can boasts of different  types of certificates – local, federal, European, of quality, of conformity and others. Moreover the number of companies that issue certificates is also countless.
To receive a certificate for manufacture, products, work, services, goods, as well as GOST certificate one needs a lot of time. The time is usually spent on collection and preparation of documents, organization of inspections by state entities and other bureaucratic activities. Besides it requires special knowledge – whom, when and in what sequence to bring documents etc.
